Jing HAN

Subtitle editor

About This Project

I came to Australia in 1988, received a Ph.D. in English Literature at the University of Sydney in 1995, and then joined Australia’s national broadcaster SBS TV. The following year, I started working as the English subtitle editor for Chinese programs, translating over 200 Chinese films and documentaries. In 2013, SBS TV introduced If You Are The One, the most popular dating show on Jiangsu TV. My team were responsible for adding English subtitles so it could be broadcast in Australia.

As the main subtitle editor of If You Are The One, I have translated almost 300 episodes. Because of the nuances of the language used in the show, it is a challenge to maintain the distinctive sense of humour when translating from Chinese into English.

The show became an unexpected hit in Australia. It has now been broadcast for nearly five years and has become the longest-running non-English TV show in the history of broadcasting in Australia. The show also serves as a window for Australian audiences to understand today’s China and the lives of ordinary people.

We get a great deal of feedback and praise about the show from audiences who appreciate the opportunity to learn more about different cultures. An elderly man once wrote to us, saying, “My wife and I are both in our seventies. Not long ago, we happened to watch If You Are The One and since then, this show has become an indispensable part of our lives. We share the same feelings as the contestants.”

Jing Han is Head of Subtitling Department, SBS TV Australia and Senior Lecturer at Western Sydney University.
